Day 1: Marrakech to Dades Gorges via High Atlas and Ouarzazate
Your d-day desert tour Marrakech to Fes Via Merzouga begins in the morning with departure from Marrakech toward the High Atlas Mountains. Travel through the scenic Tizi n Tichka Pass, stopping along the way to enjoy panoramic views and take photos of traditional Berber villages built into the mountainsides. After crossing the Atlas Mountains, the landscape gradually changes into arid desert terrain. Visit the famous Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and well known filming location for international movies. Enjoy free time to explore the ancient village and take in stunning views from the hilltop. Lunch will be in Ait Ben Haddou or nearby Ouarzazate, often called the “Hollywood of Morocco,” with an optional visit to the Taourirt Kasbah and Atlas Studios. Continue your journey through Skoura Oasis, known for its palm groves and historic kasbahs, and Kelaa M’Gouna, the Rose Valley, where you can visit a local cooperative. In the late afternoon, arrive in Boumalne Dades. Settle into your hotel or guesthouse before visiting the impressive Dades Gorges, famous for their winding roads and dramatic rock formations. Dinner and overnight stay in Dades.
Day 2: Dades valley to Merzouga via Todgha Gorges and Erfoud
After breakfast, continue the 4-day desert tour Marrakech to Fes Via Merzouga toward the eastern desert region. Stop in Tinghir, where a lush palm oasis contrasts beautifully with the surrounding mountains. Explore traditional kasbahs and historic sites before heading to the spectacular Todgha Gorges, where towering canyon walls rise dramatically above the river. Travel deeper into the desert, passing Berber villages until reaching Erfoud, known for its fossil workshops and date festival. Enjoy lunch here and visit a local fossil shop to see ancient marine discoveries from the region. In the afternoon, arrive in Merzouga, located on the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes, the largest sand dunes in Morocco. Take time to relax and explore the dunes before embarking on a camel trek across the golden sands. Ride into the heart of the desert to reach your camp, enjoying a magical sunset along the way. Spend the night in a desert camp with traditional music, dinner, mint tea, and optional sandboarding under the stars.
Day 3: Merzouga Desert Discovery
After breakfast at the desert camp and watching the sunrise over the dunes, set out on a full day of exploration around Merzouga and the Sahara Desert. Begin with a visit to Khamlia, a small village known for its deep cultural roots and vibrant Gnawa music, where you can enjoy traditional rhythms, songs, and dances performed by local musicians. Continue the journey off road around the towering Erg Chebbi dunes, passing through isolated desert settlements, old mining sites, and visiting a nomadic Berber family. Enjoy a warm welcome with mint tea while learning about their daily life and desert traditions. Return to Merzouga for lunch, with the option to try the famous local Berber pizza, freshly prepared in a traditional way. In the afternoon, optional activities such as ATV or buggy rides are available for those seeking adventure on the dunes. Later, head back to the camp for another night in the desert. Take time to explore the nearby dunes, watch the sunset, or try sandboarding. In the evening, enjoy dinner, traditional music, and a relaxed atmosphere around the camp. End the day by admiring the clear desert sky filled with stars before spending the night in the heart of the Sahara.
Day 4: Merzouga to Fes via Rissani, Ziz Valley, and Midelt
